NYU-Poly will expand its campus into neighboring buildings in Downtown Brooklyn's MetroTech Center, entering into a 20-year lease with real estate developer Forest City Ratner Companies for a total of 120,000 usable square feet at 2 MetroTech Center (9th and 10th floors) and 15 MetroTech Center (10th floor), which also involves a 9-year sub-lease of space from Wellpoint Insurance.
An important component of NYU-Poly's $38 million capital plan to transform the campus facilities to support the objectives of the academic plan, the expansion into MetroTech will accommodate i2e initiatives, additional research laboratories, more classrooms and seminar spaces, new faculty offices and laboratories and other opportunities which can help the Institute in achieving excellence. Most significantly, the moves into MetroTech Center free up space within current facilities for renovation and potential redevelopment.
2 MetroTech Center will house two academic departments, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and a new information systems server room to support all of NYU-Poly and the needs of the CSE and ECE departments. Moving into 15 MetroTech will be: the President's Office, Provost Operations, Office of Sponsored Research and Ph.D. Programs, Executive Management, and several administrative functions.
Build-outs and moves into the MetroTech Center spaces will begin in Summer 2011 and is expected to be completed by Fall 2012.
A: With NYU-Poly's gain of 120,000 square feet in MetroTech Center office buildings some work needs to be done to adapt these formerly corporate environments for academic use. In the case of the 9th and 10th floors of 2 MetroTech Center, significant work and investment is required to support academic programming needs and campus-wide computer support. Because the build out of 2 MetroTech Center, which will be home to the CSE and ECE departments, "dry" computational labs, faculty offices, small classrooms, and the new information systems server room, amounts to a gut renovation. This will take some time to complete, and it is expected that the space will be ready for occupation in Fall 2012.
By contrast, the 6th floor of 15 MetroTech Center is in nearly "move-in" ready condition, with minimal build-out and infrastructure updates required for its intended uses. Therefore, it will be the first of the MetroTech Center spaces to be occupied by Fall 2011.
A: For 15 MetroTech, which will be the first of the spaces to be occupied since it requires minimal build out, the moves will be phased in over an approximately four-month period from July to October 2011. The 15 MetroTech Center moves will be phased in over several months from roughly August to October 2011, leading with Information Systems to ensure a seamless transition of the telephone and computer networks. Again, because the space is essentially ready to move into - and because these operations would be less disrupted by moves during the semester, they likely will occur before departments move into 2 MetroTech Center. As our spaces in 2 MetroTech Center will require significantly more work and investment to modify for NYU-Poly use, those moves will be further out and likely are to be completed by Fall 2012.
While programming for the new spaces is well underway, with significant input from the impacted units and departments, moves of this magnitude come with a lot of complexity and inter-dependencies. More detailed information related to the strategically planned phased moves of faculty and staff as it becomes available.
A: Yes. An Open House will be planned for Fall 2011, so the NYU-Poly community can get acquainted with the latest additions to the campus. Additionally, through Town Hall sessions, newsletters and broadcast email updates, the community will be kept abreast of the progress of the build outs and moves.
