The NYU-Poly community was tapped to help shape an i2e Campus Transformation project called PolyPods. Flexible furniture groupings that will facilitate and encourage impromptu collaborations among faculty, students and staff, PolyPods also will add a dash of color and interest to spaces on campus that were previously underutilized.
Five days of voting opened in early February with a kick-off event hosted by President Jerry Hultin and Provost Dianne Rekow in the lobby of the Jacobs Academic Building, where the contemporary furniture options were staged. All told, more than 250 members of the NYU-Poly community weighed in on which furniture forms and upholstery colors they preferred - either casting their ballots in-person or by completing an online survey.
A curvy lounge chair, a rectilinear bench with a low-profile back rest, and a generously sized coffee table appealed to the majority of voters. The color palette voter favored includes blue, orange, red, gray and purple. The final furniture groupings, to be installed throughout campus in the spring, will feature combinations of the favorite pieces in the most popular hues.
A space planning committee with faculty, staff and student representation is working to identify the optimal number and where they should go for the initial PolyPods launch, considering the volume of traffic and ensuring there is amply room to accommodate the furniture comfortably. The PolyPods are a relatively quick and inexpensive enhancement to our campus environment, so if they are as well-received as expect them to be more PolyPods can be added to new locations.
