Teachers get WISE - August 12, 2007

Twenty middle and high school teachers from the New York region converge on Poly this week for a two-week intensive program in hands-on, sensor-based engineering design.
 
The summer Workshop in Instrumentation, Sensors and Engineering (WISE) is designed to provide technical competency enhanced through professional development in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
 
Starting on Aug. 13 and continuing through Aug. 24, the 20 teachers will receive 70 hours of in-class
professional development. An additional 15 hours of supplemental activities are scheduled for the evenings and the midpoint weekend. Successful completion of the Workshop will allow the teachers to enable their students to satisfy New York State Learning Standard 5 in mathematics, science and technology.
 
“WISE provides teachers with the technical background they need to develop sensor-based science and math curricula, and to prepare their students for science and engineering careers,” said Magued Iskander, associate professor of civil engineering. He leads the program in collaboration with Vikram Kapila, associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Noel Kriftcher, executive director of the David Packard Center for Technology and Educational Alliances.
